Although property prices in general are rising slowly in France, the price of 'lifestyle properties' are in free-fall since the financial crisis of 2007/8

Don't expect to buy cheaply in Paris or on the Riviera. The bargains are to be had in deepest France - la France profonde - and especially in the vast tracts of SW France from Dordogne to the Pyrenees.

Cheapest of all are village houses. Often cramped and dark - without garden or yard - these are shunned by local people and sold for very, very little. Take a look at our list...

Property of the month

B&B in Hautes Pyrénées south of Lourdes

B&B south of Lourdes - spa - gardens - annex

price reduced from €498K to €432K

This manor house in its own grounds in a tiny village about 15 minutes south of Lourdes. It is currently run as a B&B complete with open-air hot-tub and interior sauna facilities.

There are two seasons in the valley: summer sees a tremendous inflow of hikers, walkers and cyclists while winter caters to winter sports enthusiasts in the surrounding ski resorts. But above all, this business is devoted to road cycling as it is located in a prime position for guests wishing to test themselves against the big Tour de France's Pyrenean climbs.

There is an annex next to the main house which has variously been considered for conversion into a two-bed gite, a cycling centre (workshop and storage) or even as the owner's house leaving them the option of letting the whole 7-bedroomed main house.

The price has been recently slashed from €500k to €432k ... but an offer of around €410k should clinch the deal.
